RF-DASH Community of Practice: Dr. Todd Miner on Austere Medicine & Agricultural Emergencies

Dr. Todd Miner, ED.D FAWM

Firefighters and others responding to agricultural emergencies may be faced with a variety of challenges, including remote geographies and difficult terrain, limited communication capabilities, longer victim discovery times, extended times to definitive care, and unique or nonstandard injuries. Many of these challenges are shared by practitioners of austere or wilderness medicine.

As a guest speaker for the RF-DASH Community of Practice, Dr. Todd Miner will present on Austere Medicine and Agricultural Emergency Response on April 4, 2025 from 11am-12pm CST. Dr. Miner recently retired from the University of Colorado School of Medicine where was a Senior Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and served as the Wilderness Medicine Section Education Director. As a seasoned wilderness medicine instructor, his experience includes classes and training programs on six continents. Dr. Miner is also a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) and has experience teaching US Forest Service firefighters (see https://www.coloradowm.org/wildland-firefighter-first-aid/).

We asked Dr. Miner to provide an overview of austere medicine as it relates to agricultural emergency response. Topics covered will include: What is austere medicine? How does austere medicine differ from standard medicine? Why would austere medicine be useful for first responders and others interested in agricultural emergencies? He will especially focus on austere medicine from a rural firefighting perspective. There will be time at the end of his presentation for Q&A.
